You are here: Home / Services / National Child Measurement Programme
The National Child Measurement Programme offers your child a simple height and weight check at school in Year Reception and Year 6. This helps you understand your child’s growth and overall health at this stage. You will receive information from your child’s school before the review, and you can choose to opt out if you do not want your child to take part.
The National Child Measurement Programme is delivered by registered nurses and administrators who work with schools across Surrey and support children who are home educated. This means your child can have their height and weight checked in a familiar setting, helping you understand their growth and health. The team makes the process simple and reassuring, so you know what to expect and feel informed about your child’s wellbeing.

Questions and answers
What is the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP)?
The National Child Measurement Programme checks the height and weight of children in Reception (age 4–5) and Year 6 (age 10–11). This helps build a picture of children’s growth and health. It also helps services plan support for families.
What happens when my child is measured?
Your child will be measured at school in a private, quiet space with trained staff. They will be asked to remove shoes and coats so height and weight can be checked. The process is quick and done sensitively.
Do I need to be there or bring anything?
You do not need to attend, and your child does not need to bring anything special. It helps if they wear light clothing on the day. You will be told in advance when measurements will take place.
How long does it take?
The measurement usually takes just a few minutes per child. It is done during the school day, so it should not disrupt learning. Children return to class straight after.
Will I get the results?
Yes, you will receive your child’s results by post or secure message after the measurement. This will explain what the results mean in a clear and simple way. It may also include advice or support if needed.
What if I do not want my child to take part?
You can choose to opt out if you do not want your child measured. Your child’s school will send you information before the measurement date, including how to opt out.
