Constipation in children is common and can be uncomfortable or upsetting for both you and your child. You might notice your child is finding it hard to poo, going less often, or complaining of tummy pain. The good news is that there are simple ways to help, and support is available to get things back on track.
Constipation is when your child finds it hard or painful to do a poo, or they do not go very often. You might notice they are going less than three times a week, or that their poo is hard, large, or difficult to pass. Some children try to avoid the toilet or “hold on,” which can make things worse. You may also see tummy pain, bloating, or poo in your child's underwear.
Constipation can happen for different reasons. Your child may not be eating enough fibre, like fruit, vegetables, or whole grains, or may not be drinking enough fluids. Sometimes it starts if going to the toilet has been painful before, so your child tries to avoid it. Changes in routine, toilet training, or feeling worried about using unfamiliar toilets can also play a part.
For your child, constipation can feel uncomfortable and upsetting. They might have a sore or full tummy and may be more irritable than usual. You may notice them crossing their legs, fidgeting, or trying to hold in their poo. This can affect their confidence, especially if there are accidents.
You should seek help if your child is in pain, avoids the toilet, has large or hard poos, or poo in their underwear. It is also important to get advice if it keeps coming back or is causing distress for you or your child. You do not have to manage this on your own. With the right support, most children improve and get back into a healthy routine.
