Care of the Next Infant (CONI) is a programme is for parents who are expecting / given birth to a baby following the sudden unexpected death of their previous baby. The programme is usually offered for 6 months after the baby is born but may be longer depending on the individual circumstances by our Health Visiting team.

About this service

The Care of the Next Infant (CONI) programme provides enhanced support to parents who are expecting or have recently given birth to a baby following the sudden and unexpected death of a previous infant (SUDI). The programme aims to provide practical support, monitoring and reassurance during pregnancy and the early months of a new baby's life.

The programme is delivered by the Health Visiting Service and is usually offered until the baby reaches 6 months of age. Support may continue for longer where clinically indicated and based on individual family circumstances.

Referrals can be made by health and care professionals involved in the family's care, including: Midwives, GPs, Health visitors, Obstetricians, Neonatal and paediatric teams and other healthcare professionals supporting the family.

Early referral during pregnancy is encouraged to allow timely assessment and planning of support.

Who this service is for

We can usually help patients who are:

  • The parent is expecting a baby following a previous SUDI
  • The parent has recently had a baby following a previous SUDI
  • Either parent has experienced the sudden unexpected death of an infant.
  • The family would benefit from additional support and reassurance
  • The parent consents to a CONI referral

We may not be the right service for patients if:

  • The previous loss was not a sudden unexpected infant death (SUDI)
  • The loss relates to another family member, such as a sibling, niece or nephew
  • The family is not expecting a baby or does not have a recently born baby following a SUDI
  • The parent does not wish to take part in the CONI programme
